Dr Trevor Anderson has spent the last 18 months as General Manager, Qld Operations of Pacific Reef Fisheries, one of Australia’s largest Tiger Prawn farming companies. During that time, he has overseen the development of protocols and practices that have made the hatchery successful and lead to an increase in farm production by over 45%. He has also managed the development of 30 Ha of new ponds at Alva Beach and has been leading the licensing process for a new site at Guthalungra for 259 Ha of ponds.
Previously, Trevor was at GFB Fisheries from its inception to 2004, as General Manager and one of the founding partners. During this time, the company successfully reared commercial numbers of barramundi cod and substantially developed the assets of two farms, Seafood Online (Bowen) acquired from liquidation and the operational business of NQ Barramundi (Kelso) into an integrated company producing barramundi and employing up to 30 people. Again, this experience exposed Trevor to the processes required for licensing large developments and the issues associated with marketing large volumes of aquaculture product.
Before entering industry, Trevor spent 15 years in research and teaching of aquaculture. He was a Senior Lecturer at James Cook University and was the Education Program Leader for the Cooperative Research Centre for Aquaculture. He sat on the Aquaculture sub-committee of Seafood Training Australia developing competency based training standards for the Australian seafood industry.
Prior to James Cook, he was a member of the team that developed and offered a very successful Master of Aquaculture by Distance Education at Deakin University in Victoria. Trevor’s research has been reported in 37 publications, a co-author of an acclaimed textbook “Fish Nutrition in Aquaculture” and he has supervised 37 students up to PhD level. His work has included studies of golden perch, Murray cod, barramundi, trout, coral trout and barramundi cod.
Trevor firmly believes in the value of industry organizations. He is active in industry bodies. He is the current President of QAIF, holds a seat on the Board of NAC, and serves on the R&D committee of the APFA. He is also on a number of Editorial Boards of Aquaculture related journals. He has previously been the secretary of the ABFA and served on the Management Committee of the CRC for Aquaculture.
